The Game of Thrones is part of a fantasy novel series called 'A Song of Ice and Fire'. This adaptation is the first from the series by George R.R. Martin. Game of Thrones has been much anticipated since the early stage of its development. It has received much critical acclaim almost universally in spite of the critics of the way it utilizes nudity. It has won various nominations and numerous awards which include 2 Prime-time Emmy Award nominations in the category of 'Outstanding Drama Series' as well as a Golden Globe Award nomination in the category of 'Best Television Series/Drama'. The pilot was reported to cost HBO somewhere in the vicinity of between 5 million and 10 million U.S. dollars. The total first year budget was estimated at around 50 to 60 million dollars. In its second season there will be an estimated 15% increase in the overall budget for staging the most important clash and battle of the kings and the civil war that is the main focus of the season's series. Storyline - Seven noble families are involved in a fight for control of 'Westeros' which is a mythical land full of sexual and political intrigue. The King of Westeros, Robert Baratheon, asks an old friend of his named Eddard (Lord Stark) to serve in the position of the highest official (Hand of the King). In secret Eddard is warned about the assassination of the previous Hand, and he accepts so he can investigate the matter further. Meanwhile the Lannisters (the Queen's family) could be hatching an overthrow plot to gain power. Far across the sea all the remaining members belonging to the previous deposed family (the Targaryens) have also hatched schemes for regaining the throne. There is much friction between the houses of Lannister, Baratheon, and stark along with the great remaining houses of Arryn, Tully, Greyjoy, and Tyrell, which turns into a full-scale war. At the same time in the farthest northern regions a very old and ancient evil is awakened. Amid all the war and ongoing political confusion the Night's Watch (a neglected military band of misfits) is all that is standing between the realm of men and the treacherous icy horrors that lie beyond. The head of the renowned Stark family (Lord Eddard Ned Stark) is portrayed by Sean Bean. The Stark family members are positioned among intertwining plot lines within the series. It involves Lord Eddard Ned Stark along with his wife 'Catelyn' (played by Michelle Fairley) with their five children. There are outsiders connected to the family like Ned's bastard son named 'Jon Snow' who is portrayed by Kit Harrington. Ned also has hostage named 'Theon Greyjoy' who is portrayed by Alfie Allen. King Rober Baratheon (portrayed by Mark Addy) is one of Ned's oldest and dearest friends. He was once involved in a loveless marriage to Queen Cersei Lannister (portrayed by Lean Headey). Her father is the famously wealthy Lord Tywin Lannister (portrayed by Charles Dance) whom she defies secretly by taking her twin the Kingslayer Ser Jaime Lannister (portrayed by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) to be her secret love interest. She sternly loathes her younger brother who is the all too clever dwarf Tyrion (portrayed by Peter Dinklage) and who is also attended by his personal mistress Shae (portrayed by Sibel Kekilli) along with the sellsword 'Bronn' (portrayed by Jerome Flynn). The oldest child of Cersei is 'Prince Joffrey Baratheon' (portrayed by Jack Gleeson). He is guarded by a scarfaced warrior by the name of 'Sandor the Hound' (portrayed by Rory McCann).
