Girls premiered on May 28th of 2012 on Showcase/Foxtel. It is an American TV series starring Lena Dunham, who also created it. This comedy-drama follows a tight-knit group of girls in their 20's who live in New York City. The inspiration for the main character and premise of the show came from the 26-year old Lena Dunham's own real life experiences. HBO renewed this series on January 25th of 2013 for its 3rd season (12 full episodes). It begins with Hannah (an aspiring writer) who is shocked when her parents come to visit her all the way from East Lansing, Michigan. They come bearing the sad news that they are no longer going to support her financially as they had since she graduated from Oberlin College which was two years earlier. This left her to fend for herself in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. That gave way to Hannah and her friends navigating on their own through their twenties and taking on one mistake to the next. Her circle of 20-something friends were played by co-stars Zosia Mamet, Jemima Kirke, Alex Karpovsky, Adam Driver, and Allison Williams. Lena Dunham had a second feature in 2010 called 'Tiny Furniture'. She wrote it, starred in it, and directed it. She got very positive reviews and won some awards that included the 'Best Narrative Feature' and 'Best First Screenplay'. These were won at 'South by Southwest' and the 'Independent Spirit Awards'. Dunham's character 'Hannah' had some struggles to overcome. One was being financially cut off by her parents, another was how easily she made bad decisions, and the other was trying to become a writer. These struggles were all true to life for Dunham as she actually had lived them. They gave the show an eclectic feel and look which they achieved by putting in shopping scenes at various vintage New York boutiques (like the Brooklyn Flea & Geminola that was owned by Jemima Kirke's mother). Brief Actor and Character Plot Descriptions - Hannah, Marnie, and Jessa. (1). Lena Dunham - At this point Hannah (in need of finances) quits her internship after being denied a request to be paid. She failed miserably at working in a law office performing clerical duties and finally ends up taking a coffee shop job. (2). Allison Williams - Marnie Michaels is Hannah's best friend. Beginning in season one she is her roommate. They were all classmates during Hannah's time of studying at Oberlin College. This included Charlie and Elijah, Jessa, and Marnie. Marnie is an art gallery assistant. She is serious and quite responsible. Throughout most of the first season she struggles with the question of 'should she break up with ther current boyfriend Charlie?'. It turns out that 'he' breaks up with her leaving her to plot revenge. She makes a vow to get back at him but just exactly how is not clear. When they finally reconcile and have had their make-up sex, she then announces that she is breaking up with him. (3). Jemima Kirke - Jessa Johansson is a Bohemian as well as a world traveler. She is unpredictable to say the least. She has just come back into New York City and becomes a roommate to her cousin Shoshanna who lives in Nolita. Jessa lets it be known that she is pregnant in the pilot episode. She makes plans to have an abortion, only to end up getting her period on the very day she has the appointment.
