WNBT's opening weekend for broadcasting and programming would see a fairly packed out schedule. The likes of amateur boxing at Jamaica Arena and of course the Eastern Clay Courts tennis championships were likely to bring some huge crowds to the TV screens, so putting a commercial here could be a great thing for any business. These were also followed by the likes of some feature films, which also went down well and helped to develop a database of loyal viewers for WNBT/NBC. The problem a lot of channels were having, including NBC was the fact that a lot of their programming was limited. This was of course because of the World War II, of which the US had just entered. What this did allow, was for NBC to prepare for when the war was over. That being said, they would be put into action well before this, after V-E Day, May 8, 1945, they were able to produce hours of news coverage on the events, which eventually led to a great response. Also, this created a loyal following from US natives, who constantly wanted to be linked to their country’s efforts in the war. After the way ended, NBC were able to get back to normal and start to increase their presence in the media industry. They were already known for being one of the best broadcasters, so it was simply a case of providing some of the best content to their consumers and viewers. The next big thing came in the shape of Milton Berle. Essentially, this was the first big TV star and it helped NBC rise to the top in the 1950s. No one had seen anything like it before and with his great features in The Texaco Star Theater, NBC new they were onto a winner as their ratings soared. Nowadays NBC are still considered as a leading television network, but do struggle to stay on top without big branding or advertising campaigns.
