The portrayal of vampires, werewolves and other supernatural beings has been much the focus in Hollywood and TV shows lately. While the character traits of such supernatural beings provide the opportunity for writers to engage the viewer with a twisted and sinister plot, with the recurring theme with most of these stories with the estranged vampire who falls in love with the high school girl. True Blood on the other hand takes the idea of supernatural beings and blows it out of proportion creating an addictive and engaging plot. The show is set in Bon Temps, a fictional town in Louisiana where vampires have gone mainstream following the development of a synthetic type of blood that vampires can live on which technically would prevent them from predating on humans. The show is very loosely based on the Southern Vampire Mysteries series of novels by Charlaine Harris. Being a cable TV show, explicit and graphic portrayal of violence and sexual imagery depicting the innate nature of vampires as cold blooded beings adds to the intensity of the show. True Blood revolves around Stookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), an average waitress who happens to be a telepath, well not so average. Eventually she meets the mysterious and apparently apathetic Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) which turns into the lead character’s first love interest. Each season is based on one novel written by Charlaine Harris and the plot usually comprises of a battle between two or more supernatural forces with culminates with one party fallen. Each season is only 12 episodes (in comparison to most other popular TV shows which comprises of approximately double that number) and airs from June to September. The show initially started off with a modest number of viewers and ratings and quickly gained popularity eventually becoming the highest rated TV show in one week towards the end of season 3. It currently garners over 5 million viewers making it one of the most popular shows on cable. The show is an HBO television series that airs in several countries under various TV networks. HBO is the primary television provider in most countries while in certain countries such as the UK, other television providers such as Channel 4 and FX air the show. With the intense plot and explicit scenes, True Blood is assuredly not for everyone but you can be certain that it is a show like no other.
